JUROR: LORENZO CHAVEZ
Lorenzo Chavez was born in New Mexico and now resides in Colorado with his family. He graduated with honors from the Colorado Institute of Art in 1983. He participates in many prestigious national invitational group exhibitions including the Pastel Society of America in New York, the Coors Western Art Show, Pasadena Art Museum, Albuquerque Art Museum, Colorado Springs Fine Art Museum, and the Gene Autry Museum in Los Angeles.
Recently, Lorenzo has participated as a guest artist with the Plein Air Painters of America, the Laguna Plein Air exhibition at the Laguna Art Museum, and was honored with a successful one-man show at the C. M. Russell Museum. His work is featured in popular publications such as Southwest Art, Artists of the West, and the Pastel Journal. Three new publications feature his works: Pure Color: The Best of Pastel (North Light Books, 2006), Plein Air New Mexico (Richeson, 2006), and Landscapes of Colorado (Fresco Fine Art Publications, 2007). He is a distinguished workshop instructor of pastel landscapes. JUROR: TERRI FORD
A native Californian, Terri grew up in the South Bay Area and attended The Academy of Art College in San Francisco. She has been working with pastels since 1987 both in her studio and en plein air. Her emphasis is on the landscape, often including architectural elements...bridges, barns, fences, spires. She travels frequently to paint and teach throughout the US and abroad. Her paintings are primarily representational/impressionism. Some more loosely rendered than others. She has been a frequent award winner at the Carmel Art Festival Plein Air Event. Her works have been published widely in Pastel Journal, Plein Air Magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur, American Art Collector, Pratique des Artes and others.
JUDGE OF AWARDS: KIM LORDIER
Native to the San Francisco Bay Area and a graduate of the Academy of Art University, San Francisco CA, Kim Lordier combines keen observation and sensitivity to her award winning landscapes. In 2002 she was introduced to the art of the Early California Impressionists at the Oakland Museum, and was exposed to plein air painting as a creative means. Currently Lordier’s paintings are in private collections throughout the country, and have been exhibited at the Autry Museum, Coors Western Art Show in Denver, National Arts Club NY, Haggin Museum, Forbes Galleries, Pasadena Museum of California Art, Irvine Museum and the Laguna Art Museum.
Her work has been showcased on the cover of Southwest Art, and The Pastel Journal, as well as featured in Art of the West, Plein Air Magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur, American Artist and The Artist Magazine. Lordier's paintings have been published in the award winning Art of the National Parks, international magazine competitions, national pastel society shows and museum exhibitions. Most recently, Lordier received the Fine Art Connoisseur Award of Excellence at the California Art Club’s 103rd Annual Gold Medal Exhibition.
Kim is a Signature Member of the California Art Club, the Pastel Society of America, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, and a Distinguished Pastelist of the Pastel Society of the West Coast. A coveted workshop instructor, Kim leads workshops across the country. Most recently demonstrating at the First and Second Annual Plein Air Convention, sponsored by PleinAir Magazine.
LOCATION: The exhibition will take place at the Sedona Arts Center, located in the heart of the historical business district adjacent to restaurants, gift shops, and other tourist attractions. The dates of the show will coincide with the Spring Holiday weeks which are teeming with visitors and have traditionally increased the flow of traffic through the Art Center. Also Kim Lordier will be giving a three day workshop during the first few days of the show and pastel demos will be scheduled.
ELIGIBILITY: Open to all pastel artists.
ENTRY FEES: $35 for members, $45 for non-members for up to 3 entries. A maximum of 2 paintings per artist will be accepted into the show. All Entries must be made online at APAA.wildapricot.org Entry Fee is non-refundable. No images will be accepted after the deadline date and time. ENTRY INFORMATION: + SIZE LIMITATION: Paintings with mats and/or frames cannot exceed 672 square inches total. Outside frame edge length x width has to be less than 672 square inches. No exceptions. This gallery has wall space limitations and we would like each artist to find a frame that compliments their painting but is not oversize in relation to the image. We like to be able to include as many artists as possible into the show, but oversize frames do not help us. Each painting will get the best lighting and position that we can find. Thank you.
+ All work must be original pastel painting completed in the last two years and not previously shown in an APAA exhibition or show.
+ Work copied from images, paintings, or photographs, regardless of copyright issues, that have been published or appeared on the internet, dvd, or any publication or that are likely to be published in any format whatsoever shall not be eligible.
It is permissible to gather and use multiple images, paintings, or photographs as resource material to create an original composition.
It is permissible to use photos from an individual that you personally know with their permission providing the individual is the source of the image, and the image is not rendered as an exact copy and meets the criteria stated above. The artist must provide the original source image or written permission upon request if a question arises about the originality of the work. Any work that cannot be verified will be removed from the show.
+ All artwork must be completed with 80% dry pastel as a final layer, underpainting as part of the process is acceptable, no oil pastels.
+ Paintings must be suitably framed with dust cover paper and wired for hanging with D ring hangers. No sawtooth hangers.
+ All paintings must be for sale. APAA to receive a 23% commission. Any painting withdrawn as an Entry by the artist after the deadline date and time will be subject to a payment to APAA of 20% of the stated sales price or banned from entering any APAA shows for two years.
+ Work done under supervision, mentorship, or in an instructed class, workshop, online instruction, published step by step instruction, dvd, or any other form of instruction is not eligible. Any work shown to be part of any instruction as defined above will be removed from the show.
+ Accepted paintings must be identical to the image submitted for entry. No substitutions, copies, adjustments, repairs, or any other modification to the painting is allowed after the entry image is submitted. NOTE: It is a good practice to compare the image on your computer alongside the completed painting to ensure color equivalence.
DELIVERY OF PAINTINGS + Labels for paintings will be issued with notification of acceptance
+ All artwork that needs to be transported locally to Sedona by anyone other than the artist, must be completely enclosed in an art portfolio bag with handles and labeled with the artist's name. No soft covers or cardboard carriers allowed. The person delivering the painting is responsible for opening, retaining, and returning the packing materials to the artist.
+Any artwork that needs to be shipped must be received between the dates of April 1st and April 7th to the address given in the notification of acceptance. Shipping specifications will also be given in the notification of acceptance.
LIMITATION OF LIABILITY: Artwork will be handled with care, however neither the Arizona Pastel Artists Association as an entity or its members or the Sedona Art Center or their employees or agents will be responsible for any loss or damage to frames or paintings. Glass is used at the artist's risk and the artist is responsible for replacing broken glass or frames. By submitting an entry, the artist is agreeing to all conditions stated in the prospectus. APAA suggests that artists carry separate insurance . Permission to reproduce the artist's work for APAA publicity purposes is deemed given by the artist with the acceptance of their work.
ENTRY IMAGES TO SHARON FREY: Prepare your images for submission by cropping them so that no frames , mats, or whitespace are included. Resize them to 72 dpi and 900 pixels on the longest side. Rename the image so that it has your last name first, then your first initial, and then the title of the painting. Send an email to email@example.com and attach the images for show submission. In the body of the email to Sharon include the information about each image that you are attaching. PLEASE BE PREPARED TO SEND AN IMAGE IN 300 DPI IF REQUESTED FOR ADVERTISING.

EXAMPLE: The three painting images that you attach to the email have been renamed to FREYS.RED APPLES, FREYS.BLUE BOTTLES & FREYS.BIG LANDSCAPE
